Moringa aka "Miracle Tree"

Recently I was sent a bag of Ecoideas Moringa Leaf Powder from Vista Magazine . Now anyone that knows me knows I love superfoods and this one is one of my favourites. I have never tried this brand so I was super excited to try it out. If you aren't familiar with it here is a little information.

Moringa comes from a tree that is native to the Himalayas but can also be found in other parts of the world like Hawaii, Asia , Africa and Latin America. It is know as the Miracle Tree because it has an impressive nutrient content. It is known to be a natural energy booster including 90 nutrients and 40 antioxidants. It has 17 times the amount of calcium to milk, 4 times the potassium of bananas, 20 times the iron of spinach and 8 times the protein of yogurt. Pretty impressive eh !!!

Now because Moringa has high amounts of antioxidants its great to help fight free radicals.

What are free radicals ?

Free radicals are toxic byproducts of oxygen metabolism that can cause significant damage to living cells and tissues in a process called "oxidative stress."

Oxidative stress is associated with chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

A study published in Journal of Food Science and Technology shows women that were taking 1.5 teaspoons of moringa leaf powder every day for three months significantly increased blood antioxidant levels.

One thing most people are lacking are basic nutrients and Moringa has those covered. Moringa has a significant amount of B vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin C and K, protein, manganese, calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorous.

Moringa can be used in a ton of ways. It can be added to smoothies, baking, in dressings, as a tea or even a latte.

Summer is approaching and one way I love to use this is by making an Iced Moringa Tea.

Iced Moringa tea

1 tsp of Moringa leaf powder

1 1/2 cups of water

honey to taste

optional lemon slice

Boil water and pour into a glass with Moringa power stir and let cool. Add honey to taste and add ice and a lemon slice.

I hope you enjoy this sitting by the pool this summer, I know I sure will be.
